A few travel tips from around the Web

Good article by my brother Alex on TripHunter He dives into some of the best "travel hacks" out there - The best airlines for getting frequent flier upgrades, General travel tips, Getting comfortable in cattle class etc. etc.

I'm looking forward to the next post on how to get a free upgrade! I've tried countless times (with mixed success)

Qype: The Sussex in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

This pub is a good people watching spot if you can get a seat outside. You're in the heart of Covent garden here, so plenty look at. The interior is fairly generic and don't expect Michelin star cooking. I suppose this pub does what it says on the tin - cold lager, reasonably friendly folk and a standard (perhaps a bit touristy) menu. Speaking of which, think twice about going here in August. This place is heaving during the summer months!

Qype: Napket Hanover Square in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants

Not quite as good as the Napket around the corner in Mayfair (no salad bar) but still a decent place to grab a sandwich. It's expensive in here, but i've always found the food to be fresh and tasty. Expect to pay £6-7 for a sandwich and a drink.

Qype: Dale Hill Golf Club (The Woosnam Course) in Wadhurst

Wadhurst - Sport - Golf

Built in 1997, the Ian Woosnam course at Dale Hill is one of the finest 18 hole golf courses in Kent. The course itself is challenging, but not ridiculously so. Expect a number of lengthy, challenging Par 4s and 5s and 3-4 tight, but very pretty Par 3's.

According to Woosnam, "The course has been designed to have the perfect balance - tough enough for the pros and easy enough for the amateurs - and can be enjoyed by all."

A round here on a weekend will set you back £45 and buggies are included in this price. The course is open to the public and booking a tee time is compulsory on this course and definitely advised on the Old Course. Is it worth it? Definitely. I want to come back next weekend!

New Travel Blog

My brother and I have been talking about setting up a travel blog for ages and we're finally getting round to actually doing it. TripHunter will start its life as a travel blog - experiences, deals, funny stories, advice etc. and might (one day) evolve into something bigger and more interactive. We hope to get the first post up in the next couple of days, so happy reading and please let us know if there are any particular destinations or travel topics you'd like us to cover!

Qype: Inn The Park in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - British - English

Very busy in tourist season (particularly during the day), but nevertheless a good place to stop for a snack if you are out and about around Buckingham Palace. Breakfast is supposed to be the best meal served here and i'm told the "build your own breakfast" is the right option to go for.

Expect high prices. This place is a honeypot for big spending American and Western European tourists.

Check out my review of Inn The Park - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Mario's Cafe in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Cafes & Coffee Shops

A bit of a greasy spoon this place. If you're after a cheap, hearty but low quality full english breakfast, this could be the cafe for you. They do breakfast, lunch and dinner in here and the staff are actually pretty friendly. Popular with local taxi drivers and shop owners.

Check out my review of Mario's Cafe - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Flowers By Laurette in London

London - Shopping - Florists

Excellent indoor and outdoor flowers and plants, but f'ing expensive. The ladies in here are very nice and the stock is beautiful but you might need to take out a second mortgage to buy 2-3 pot plant in here. Still, it's a good shop and i'll come back.

Quick tip - Venn street market is great for cheap plants and flowers. It's open on saturdays and sundays and is pretty much opposite Laurette.

Check out my review of Flowers By Laurette - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Cafe Lido in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Cafes & Coffee Shops - Cafes

Very decent bacon and egg sandwiches and friendly staff too. A decent, old school alternative to Pret, Eat and the other high street sandwich chains.

The perfect hangover cure.

Qype: Bull Inn in Sissinghurst

Sissinghurst - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

The Bull in Sissinghurst is where i learnt how to drink. Popular with Cranbrook school 6th formers, this was our hang out on Friday and Saturday nights when we looked old enough to order a pint. Plenty of outdoor seating to the rear of the pub and very attractive hanging baskets out front. You're a stones throw from Sissinghurst Church here, so it's also quite a good spot for a swift half after evensong. I haven't eaten in the Bull for ages, so i can't really comment, but what i can say is that whenever i return to Sissinghurst, i'm always greeted with warm, Kentish hospitality in here and the ale is always spot on.

Check out my review of Bull Inn - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Bull Inn in Rolvenden

Rolvenden - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

A great pub with cracking food. Local produce through and through (bangers, potatoes, veg... the lot) and an excellent choice of beer and wine. Guest ales were particularly farmy, but delicious. Having grown up in the Weald, i'm amazed i'd never been here before but now that i've discovered this little gem, i'll be back quite often i'm sure.

Check out my review of Bull Inn - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Eight Bells Inn in Hawkhurst

Hawkhurst - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

One of the less frequented pubs in Hawkhurst, but they are under new management now so we poked out heads in. This place used to have great live music on, but i'm told this is no more and that the new landlord is quite as friendly as the previous lot. Anyway, they still have real ale on and look to do nice food, so all is not lost!

Qype: Livebait in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - Seafood

I went to a Livebait in Oxford (which I thoroughly enjoyed) and came here a few weeks ago thinking it was part of the same chain.... I was wrong. While the fish n' chips here is good, it's ridiculously overpriced. £18 for a main course! Pull the other one.

Quick tip - Get a voucher. I've often seen 25% of meal vouchers being flapped around in here, so the obviously exist. Can't see any on Qype mind....

Check out my review of Livebait - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Southbank Tandoori in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - Indian - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants

The Southbank Tandoori is a far cry from being the best Indian restaurant in London, but it's decent and it's location is perfect.

Recommended order of play for a night out:

1. Head to the Old Vic for an early evening show
2. Wander down to the Anchor & Hope for a few pints of real ale (try and eat here, but it's always so busy)
3. Stagger across the road to the Southbank Tandoori for some late night Indian treats. I can recommend the chicken madras and lamb bhuna. Both hit the spot.

Check out my review of Southbank Tandoori - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: The Boathouse in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

I wanted to love the boathouse but i ended feeling a bit "meh" about it. So the views of the river are great and there's plenty of outdoor space and seating, but such a location cries out for rustic, riverside charm and what you get is faceless, chainy, logo in the foam mediocrity that we're all so used to seeing on the high streets of provincial towns around the country.

Ok, maybe i'm being a bit harsh. This place is alright, it's just not my cup of tea. But just imagine how much better it would be with a nice garden, wholesome grub, some picnic tables and a few dogs running about? Much better methinks.

Check out my review of The Boathouse - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: The French House in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - French - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Bars - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

The French House is a good place to come for (relatively cheap) litres of cider. It's proper farmy, French stuff so expect a few more hairs on your chest at the end of the evening. You usually get a decent crowd in here (if not a bit pretentious) and on warm, sunny evenings most of the punters spill out onto the street because the interior is pretty frickin' tiny. Still, it makes fore a good street drinking atmosphere.

I prefer the Coach and Horses (next door) but this place is still worth a look.

Qype: Bullfrogs in London

London - Shopping - Fashion - Shopping - Fashion - Ladies Fashion - Shopping - Fashion - Shoes

I used to always think Bullfrogs was just for women, but to my surprise, I found them stocked up with converse, havaianas, gents shirts, shorts and much more. Friendly staff, excellent location (right next to Clapham Common tube) and half decent prices.

I'll be back!

Qype: The 'Avalon' Gastro Pub in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

My mind isn't quite made up about the Avalon. This used to be a pub called the George and it did what it said on the tin (very well) - pub grub, real ale, sky sports. Well, the George has been turned into Clapham South's most exclusive gastro pub (or so they say). I'll have to come back and eat to pass final judgement, but the atmosphere last night, the queue outside the pub and the prices are probably enough to turn me away for good.

Check out my review of The 'Avalon' Gastro Pub - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Melito in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Fastfood & Takeaway - Pizza

I like pizza that is thick, greasy and loaded with mozarella cheese. Melito serves completely the opposite to this and yet i'm strangely drawn to it. This is healthy pizza with very little cheese and not a dollop of marinara sauce in sight. Doesn't sound too appealing does it? Well, trust me, while this isn't the kind of pizza i usually eat, it still hit the spot. I can highly recommend both the Salami and artichoke/onion pizza. Fresh, tasty bases and just the right amount of topping. I feel full now, but i'm not about to have a stroke (which is how i feel if i eat too much Papa Johns or Domino's).

The only thing letting Melito down was the fact that they ran out of pizza! But hey, it's their first day so i'm going to cut them some slack.

Qype: The Princes Head in Richmond

Richmond - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Bars - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

A great pub, right on Richmond green. Excellent fun sitting on the grass outside and watching the last few overs of a cricket match. Good selection of real ale and decent (but not great) food. Popular with locals and visitors, I reckon the Prince's Head squeeze into my top 5 pubs in Richmond list.

Check out my review of The Princes Head - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: La Manufacture in Paris

Paris - Hotels & Holidays - Hotels

Like Phil says, this place is reasonable value for money but the hotel is nothing to write home about. It's clean, the staff are friendly and you're in a cool part of town, but the rooms are tiny and poorly decorated (2 people would feel pretty cramped in here).

I'm still amazed that this is all 108 Euros can get you in Paris. Ludicrous....

Check out my review of La Manufacture - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: High Brooms Railway Station in Tunbridge Wells

Tunbridge Wells - Transportation - Public Transport - Stations

A very nifty little train station on the outskirts of Tunbridge Wells. The station was originally opened in 1893 (and was called Southborough until 1925 when it acquired its new name). What's great about High Brooms is that's it's a direct artery into London Bridge and London Charing Cross. On a week day, trains leave about every 15 mins straight to the capital (and take about 45 mins). My rush hour train this morning was reasonably quiet and i got a seat!

Maybe living in Tunbridge Wells and commuting into the city isn't such a bad idea after all....

Check out my review of High Brooms Railway Station - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Strada in Kent

Kent - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - Italian & Pizza - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - Strada

Mount Pleasant road is an interesting specimen at the moment. The entire row of shops and restaurants across the road from Strada has been shut down (i think the owner of the land is redeveloping it), so it's not the most picturesque part of TW at the moment. That being said, this particular branch of Strada is very good indeed. Expect the standard Strada food (pizza, pasta etc) and drink (nice italian red wines), but what stood out for me here was the service and the dining space (great glasshouse area on the 2nd floor). We were very well looked after last night and an eyelid was not batted when we showed our 25% Qype discount voucher on our iPhone (we actually ended up saving about £20!)

Let's hope they redevelop the rest of Mt. Pleasant road so that Strada isn't the only decent place this end of the high street!

Qype: Ondine in Edinburgh

Edinburgh - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - Seafood

Crikey Moses this is a good restaurant.

We were lucky enough to sit in the private dining room here and we were spoilt rotten by the staff and the platters of fruit des mer that were brought to our table.

What to eat:

- Squid tempura
- Oyster selection with chorizo
- Carlingford rock oysters
- Lobster thermidor

and my personal favourite - the fish curry (i think it was hake).

Outstanding wine, brilliant service and a great atmosphere. Surely one of the top 10 restaurants in Edinburgh.

Qype: Grafton House in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - British

Hmmm.... Grafton House is just a bit too cool for school. As the reviewers mention below, this is the kind of restaurant you'd expect to find in Mayfair or Green park and feels somewhat out of place on the Pavement in Clapham.

Good things:

- The food is actually quite good. Try the sea bass or the lamb cutlets (both are good) and be sure to take advantage of the early bird special!

- Pretty spacious. You can walk in here on a week night without booking and definitely get a table.

- Good date spot. If you're in Clapham and want to impress a girl, this or 409 might be a good shout. Then again, if i took a girl here she might think i was an utter tool.....

Bad things:

- Lots and lots of Henry's and Felicity's here. Grafton House attracts the "posh grot" of Clapham as my friend so eloquently put it.

- Really expensive drinks. A cocktail will cost you £8.50 here. They're good, but man is that expensive.

- Atmosphere. During the day (and pretty much Monday-Friday) this place is completely dead.

Check out my review of Grafton House - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: The Chandos in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

I don't really know what to make of the Chandos.

It's a Sam Smith's pub, so the beer is cheap. It's right on Trafalgar square so the location is excellent. I guess it's atmosphere which is lacking. Don't get me wrong, it's always heaving but the decor has no soul or character - very simple wooden benches and tables (and that's about it!)

One of those places where you say "Well, everywhere else is closing or too full. I guess we should go the Chandos." For a last resort pint in theatreville, this is a safe bet.

Check out my review of The Chandos - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: The Merchant in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - Wine Bars - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

Meh.....

This is the pub you come to if you're train is delayed from Clapham Junction and you fancy a bit of a walk around the area. Don't get me wrong, it's not that bad, it's just not quite as good as the Goat (50m away) or the Draft House on Northcote road (about 150m away). The food in the Merchant is probably it's best quality (nice sharing platters, olives and meze boards) but essentially this is just a wetherspoons perched on the A3.

Check out my review of The Merchant - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Batofar in Paris

Paris - Nightlife - Clubs

Awesome venue for a summer party. Drinks aren't cheap, but the riverside location is pretty unbeatable. Recommended order of play - i) Have a 1/2 roast chicken and some fruit punch at the restaurant opposite the boat ii) Hop onto the deck of the boat for sundowners overlooking the river iii) Rave like a loony on the dancefloor in the bowels of Le Batofan.

A great venue.

Check out my review of Batofar - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: The Lighthouse in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Bars - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

The Lighthouse is my new favourite pub in Battersea/Clapham. I'd heard good things about it from friends and family, but never went because of the location (it's a bit of a walk from a tube station - probably 15 mins). Trust me, it's worth the trek.

Best bits:

- Sunday Roasts. Excellent organic lamb, beef and chicken. I opted for the 1/2 barbecue chicken with roast potatoes and fresh veg and i absolutely loved it.

- Friendly, well trained, quick staff. This is a popular pub and they 2 guys behind the bar seemed to deal very well with the masses of people.

- Beer garden. I was amazed none of the other reviewers mentioned it! Probably the best feature of the Lighthouse. Seats about 30-40 people and is a complete sun trap.

I'll be back!

Qype: Dale Hill Golf Club in Wadhurst

Wadhurst

A very nice 36 hole golf course in the heart of the Weald of Kent. We played the "Old Course" (just 9 holes this time) and i was impressed with the course (a couple long par 5's and 4's + 2 tricky par 3's). The staff were friendly and it's only about £15 for 9 holes.

I will be back to play the Ian Woosnam course (slightly more expensive) this month and i will be sure to update my review then!

Qype: The Pavement in London

London - Arts & Entertainment

I think this might be the first street i've ever reviewed on Qype.....

The Pavement is one of the finer streets in SW4. Excellent selection of pubs, eateries, shops and places to sit outdoors. It's also a great place to live! Stretching views of the common and a great place to hang out on sunny days.

Top 3 Pubs on the Pavement:

The Frog
The Sun
The Calf

Top 3 Shops on the Pavement:

The Clapham Old Town Supermarket
Cock Pond Galleries
Birksen Florists

Top places to eat on the Pavement:

The Pavement Cafe
Grafton House
Macaron

Qype: Aqua in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars

The reviews below say it all really. The food and the service is just not up to scratch. It's a bit like eating at a really bad All Bar One. My steak was dry and chewy (and i paid £15 for it!). service was patchy and a bit dismissive. Oh, and a pint of beer is £4.20.

Tip - Head across the river into Pimlico for a much better selection of restaurants.

Qype: Cock Pond in London

London - Arts & Entertainment - Lakes & Ponds

Cock Pond is a wading/paddling pond to the North East of Clapham Common. In the summer months you'll find hordes of children splashing about and in the winter (when the water has been drained) this is a popular spot for skate boarders priming themselves for the skate ramp about 200m away.

A great spot for families in the summer. If only they would fill the darn thing all the way to the top! It always looks like settled rain water to me.....

Check out my review of Cock Pond - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Pond Galleries in London

London - Arts & Entertainment - Galleries

A very nice, quaint little gallery on the pavement in Clapham. Lots of local art work for sale upstairs and an excellent picture framing setup downstairs. I recently had a very large poster framed here and i found the staff to be friendly and efficient and the price wasn't bad at all.

I'll be back!

Qype: CCH Express Minicab in London

London - Transportation - Public Transport - Taxi Companies

An excellent, affordable and highly recommend cab company in Clapham Old Town. I'm always amazed by the speed at which these guys turn up (regardless of time of day), the quality of the cars and the friendliness of the drivers.

Streets ahead of Addison Lee. An easy 5 stars!

Qype: Nardulli in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Fastfood & Takeaway - Eating & Drinking - Cafes & Coffee Shops - Ice Cream Parlours

Fantastic ice cream right on the Common. It's not cheap here, but this is a proper Italian Gelateri and the quality of the ice cream is superb. I can highly recommend the French Vanilla, Caramel or Mint flavours (i tried all of these this weekend!).

Recommended Saturday afternoon in Clapham Old Town = Football on Clapham Common, Ice Cream at Nardulli, beer in the Frog (right next door). Perfect!

Qype: St Christopher's Inns in Paris

Paris - Hotels & Holidays - Hostels - Hotels & Holidays - Hostels - St. Christopher's Inn

This is a great hostel.

What's so great?

- Excellent bar downstairs with cheap booze (for Paris) and big food (try the burger!)
- Clean, relatively spacious dorm rooms
- Friendly staff
- Pool tables
- A VERY international crowd
- Decent location (the Metro is about a 2 minute walk away)

I'll definitely be staying here again next time i'm in Paris!

Qype: Vinifera in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Bars

I worry about Vinifera, because pretty much every business that has occupied this slot on Bedford road has failed. It's a half decent place, but i must admit, it does lack a bit of "je ne sais quoi". Good for a quick drink after work, but you won't want to spend hours on end in here.

3 stars and no more.

Qype: Granterroirs in Paris

Paris - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - Shopping - Food & Drink - Delicatessen

An excellent little deli/lunch spot moments from Miromesnil metro station. Granterroirs just get everything right. Excellent service, superb food and a great choice of wine. I can highly recommend the Fois Gras and the Chef's Italian salad as a main course. The desserts are also exceptional (try the Soupe au Fraise!).

This will be my first port of call as soon as i'm back in Paris :)

Qype: The Colonies in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

A very pleasant little pub just off of Buckingham Gate. It's tucked away just enough to avoid becoming a tourist trap, so you'll mostly find locals in here. I find it's best in the summer here - people spill out onto the street with pints of ale and glasses of wine. A great place to socialize after work.

Qype: Sergios London in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - Italian & Pizza

Friendly, efficient staff who seem more used to serving tourists than locals. The pizzas in here are enormous (try the calzone!) and arrived very quickly (within 10 minutes).

While you may be blown away by the portion sizes, you probably won't be by the flavour and quality of the food. Don't get me wrong, it's ok, but you could probably eat just as well (if not better) in Carluccio's or Strada.

If you're up for enormous, but slightly overpriced pizza, this is the place for you.

Qype: Cycle Surgery in London

London - Transportation - Cars & Bikes - Bicycles

I like Cycle Surgery and this particular branch one of the best i've been into. Like most chain cycle shops, you're going to struggle to find a bike in here for less than £150 (but i have found the prices here to be slightly more forgiving than Evans Cycles) but the service is good and bike peripherals (lights, seats, helmets, clothing) are well stocked.

Bike repair - I'm taking my racer in tomorrow morning for a tune up so i'll be sure to leave an update on repair costs and quality!

Qype: The Belle Vue in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - International

Meh....

I find it hard to get excited about the Belle Vue when there are so many other great pubs in this area. It gets 3 stars from me because they do everything well, but there's nothing exceptional about the pub.

When is it good to come here?

Saturday lunch time or on a week night if you fancy a quite drink near clapham common tube station.

Good food?

Reasonable (and decent portion sizes). A place for a light snack as opposed to a full on meal.

Booze?

No real ale. Not good :(

Staff?

Friendly staff, but i always find it almost impossible to get served here (even if there are only a handful of people at the bar).

Check out my review of The Belle Vue - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: The Sun in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

The Sun in Clapham is my new local and what a great little pub to have just a hop, skip and a jump from my front door. Excellent food menu. I can highly recommend the cheddar and bacon burger, the pork belly and the fish n' chips. All are top notch. They also do a great Sunday roast here but be warned, they tend to start running out the popular roast dishes around 5pm, so get here early unless you want to settle for nut roast.

Good selection of beers (Wandle, Landlord, Spitfire, Franziskaner and many more) + generally quite friendly bar staff (if not a bit disorganized sometimes). Check out the pub quiz on sunday nights, it's a good crack.

Free Business Directories & Free Ads online

I've been doing quite a bit of research recently into folks offering free advertising online. There are a bunchy of crappy sites and it seems like the ones winning out are the old school classifieds players like Gumtree, Craigslist, Loot etc. and the new breed of business directories who seem to be rapidly stealing share from the likes of Yell, Thomson Local & BT.

Utterly amazed that Gumtree doesn't rank well for "free advertising".... Very odd.

Qype: Butcher's American Steakhouse in Hamburg

Hamburg - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - Steak Houses - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - American

Woah Nelly!

I thought i'd had the best steak in Hamburg at Schlaterborse, but i was sadly mistaken. I went to Butcher's for lunch today and i was absolutely blown away.

So what's so good about it then?

- Delicious American style steaks: T-Bone, Tri-Tip, Marbled Rib Eye and thick fillets. The rib eye steak was absolutely spot on.

- Friendly, English speaking staff.

- Great part of Hamburg. Nice and leafy.

- Good wine. I didn't try any, but the wine list looked pretty awesome.

I'll be back, i'm just going to have to wait until pay day before i go again!

Qype: The Hawkenbury in Tonbridge

Tonbridge

I came to the Hawkenbury after a 40 mile bike ride, so my review might be slightly skewed!

Best things about the Hawkenbury:

- Massive menu. You're completely spoiled for choice here: mixed grill, surf and turf, fillet steaks, local pies and much, much more.

- Decent, local bottled ale. I can't remember what it was called, but it was brewed in Staplehurst and it was pretty delicious!

- Friendly staff. We were practically the only ones in the pub, but still, the bar staff were nice and looked after us well.

- They serve food between 2.30pm and 7pm on Saturday! One of the few pubs in the area that does this.

Not so good things about the Hawkenbury:

- The menu may be massive, but the quality of food could be better IMHO. I paid £20 for my fillet steak. It was good, but not great (a bit overcooked, that's all).

- Location. It's a bit off the beaten track!

- Decor/Ambience. Less Gastropub and more Match of the day. A great place to watch the football i imagine, but not somewhere you would take your parents.

Qype: The White House in London

London - Arts & Entertainment - Events - Nightlife - Events - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - British - English

I think the White House ranks about 3rd or 4th on my list of night spots in Clapham to hit after 11pm. It's not a bad place (they get some pretty decent DJ's in fact), it's just a bit OTT (Oh, and it's far from a "Manhattan Style nightclub).

Anyway, The White House is worth a go if the queues for Lost Society or Artesian Wells are too long - good selection of cocktails and (generally) friendly staff and clientele.

Qype: Duke On The Green in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs - Shopping - Florists - Shopping - Gifts & Cards

Having read Omnivore's review, i certainly won't be coming to the Duke for food!

We popped in on Sunday night as the Sloaney Pony across the green was absolutely heaving and Aragon House was shut (apparently there was a massive fight, which i was sad to miss!). The pub was surprisingly quiet given it was a bank holiday Sunday, so we were served quickly and we managed to get a seat! Plenty of real ale on tap and a young, attractive clientele here. Plenty of people called Rupert and Felicity....

I might come back, but IMHO this is the 3rd or 4th best pub in Parson's Green. Plenty of better watering holes just around the corner from here.

Check out my review of Duke On The Green - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Birksen Florists in London

London - Shopping - Florists

A great little florist in Clapham old town. Very friendly staff who are willing to take the time to chat & help + a decent selection of flowers, trees, seeds and garden ornaments.

It's not cheap in here (and if you need heavy duty gardening equipment, you're probably better off at B&Q) but everything is high quality. I'll be back for tomato feed!

Qype: Swingrite Golf Driving Ranges in Haydon

Haydon - Sport - Golf - Driving Ranges

Good old Swingrite! I have very fond memories of coming down here and hitting a bucket full of balls over half terms. Well, last weekend i came back (about 15 years later!)

What's new:

- Pitch and Putt (a 9 hole, short pitch and putt)
- Putting Green
- Extended car park

What's stayed the same:

Pretty much everything else! Still the same old chap behind the counter who limits the number of clubs you can rent at any one time. Still the beat up old Ford Cortina that everyone tries to hit on the driving range AND still the same prices after 15 years. Magic.

Qype: Blackbrook Tavern in Ruishton

Ruishton - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

Usually pubs next to Motorways and bordering Premier Inn's are dingy, rough places. The Blackbrook tavern is actually pretty decent though and we ate and drank well here.

Food is cheap and i can recommend the Jungle Chicken Curry. It's nowhere near the level of a "high street cuzza" but the portion size was good and the poppadoms crisp. 3 local ales on tap and very friendly staff. The Blackbrook also puts on breakfast for Premier Inn guests in the morning. Bottomless Full English for £7.50 is a pretty good deal if you ask me!

I won't be rushing back, but i'd recommend it to friends staying in Taunton or driving to the South West.

Qype: All Star Bowling Lanes in London

London - Sport - Nightlife - Bowling - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - American - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Bars

A very cool, 4 lane bowling alley between Holborn and Russell Sq. tube stations. They're going all out on the All American, Happy Days theme here and they kind of pull it off. Ok, Our waitress was called Tracy and she was probably from Dagenham but the outfit was spot on :)

Bowling is pricey, but the lanes are in great condition. We had a couple of technical glitches on Lane 3, but they were soon fixed.

The food here is also decent - Half slab ribs, bacon cheeseburgers, mac n' cheese, philly cheese steaks and all that fatty, American goodness is served up here. I'm also told they do alcoholic milkshakes but i didn't try one.

A fun night out and it probably has the edge on Bloomsbury Lanes just around the corner.

Qype: Taunton Vale Golf Club in Creech Heathfield

Creech Heathfield - Sport - Golf

A very decent Golf courses about 5 miles outside of Taunton. 9 holes will set you back about £14 which is reasonable given the quality of the course. The course itself is relatively forgiving, so it's good for beginners and seasoned golfers alike. Golf shoes and golf dress is not required on the 9 hole course, so if you fancy rocking up and playing in your jeans and t-shirt that's fine (different rules on the 18). Club hire is £5 for a bag of decent clubs.

I'll be back!

Qype: Old Barn Owl Inn in Taunton

Taunton - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

The Old Barn Owl Inn is a very nice little pub in rural Somerset. It's a bit off the beaten track, but it's definitely worth the trip.

We came here at the weekend for my grandpas 90th birthday and a good time was had by all. You can get a 3 course meal here for £14 (I can recommend the carrot & apple soup, the chicken in mushroom sauce and the apple pie.) which i think is great value. Excellent outdoor space (with Llamas!) and friendly staff.

Try the real ales! They're local and delicious.

Check out my review of Old Barn Owl Inn - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Premier Inn in Taunton

Taunton - Hotels & Holidays - Hotels

Not a bad Premier Inn and pretty decent value for money. We stayed 2 nights (a Friday and a Saturday) and it worked out at £73 for 2 nights based on 2 sharing a room. Bargain! Beds were reasonably comfortable, shower was hot and powerful and there was no noise from the M5 (I was worried about this when we checked in). Bottomless Full English in the morning was decent (bacon very salty, but that was about my only complaint).

My only gripe with the Premier Inn, Ruishton is the odd smell. The corridors smell like someone was trying to cover something up with industrial cleaning products and the Loos smell like, well, they smelt like wee. Not very pleasant, but what do you expect at such a low price.

All in all a good stay and a good experience.

Qype: The Coach and Horses in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - British - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

Now this is a good pub.

Personal service, great real ale, a cracking quiz night and phenomenally good, cheap food. I can highly recommend the Indian style and sausage and beans scotch eggs. They sound strange, but they're absolutely delicious. It's this sort of unusual, but wonderful cuisine which seems to have really triggered The Coach and Horses' popularity beyond EC1 to across the whole of London. It's just a really good pub, and now that i've been, i can see why people are willing to travel great distances to come here.

I'll be back, but i'll be sharpening up my food trivia before i'm back for the quiz!

Qype: The Punchbowl in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

The Punchbowl is not your everyday sort of pub. Tucked down a side street in Mayfair, this Guy Ritchie boozer is about the most opulent place serving Bombardier I think I've ever been in. Clientele are local (and filthy rich as you would expect), save for a few American tourists and a couple of stilletoed, Saturday night slappers looking to bag a millionaire. Plenty of ales on - Deuchars, London Pride and 2 or 3 more. What really makes this pub so good though is the food. The posh sausage and mash was awesome. Toulouse sausages, creamy mash and tasty gravy. Not cheap (£14.95), but to be honest, I'm happy to pay £5 over the normal pub rates for a meal of such quality. Service was friendly and attentive even though they were quite busy.

Will I be back soon?

Probably. It's near my office and it would be a decent place to take a date or celebrate a special occassion. It's expensive and I definitely wouldn't come here on a Friday night with my mates, but if you're looking for something a bit special, this could be the place for you.

Qype: Chuckle Club in London

London

The Chuckle Club has been running for 24 years and proudly labels itself "central London's best comedy show". While i wouldn't go that far, it is still a cracking night out. We came here on Saturday night and saw 3 great comedians (one was a bit iffy, but then that's always the case with comedy clubs isn't it!?).

The King's Union is a nice venue and the beer was dirt cheap. Entry for Joe Public is £13 and students only have to pay a fiver.

Check out the list of people that have performed at the Chuckle Club (below)! Pretty impressive, but i can't help but feel this place has had a slight fall from grace since the glory days of Mike Myers and Robin Williams.... Anyway, it's a good night out

Comedians that have appeared at the Chuckle Club:

Al Murray
Eddie Izzard
Frank Skinner
Harry Hill
Lee Evans
Mike Myers
Robin Williams
Paul Merton
Russell Brand
Simon Pegg

Qype: Imbibe Bar & Restaurant in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs - Nightlife - Clubs

A bit of a weird one this....

I couldn't work out whether it was a pub or a restaurant when i walked in. Part of me wanted to wait to be seated and the part wanted to canter up to the bar and order a pint of Amstel. Very odd.

In Imbibe's defence, they do have a very decent outdoor area, decent beer selection (although limited ale) and what looks to be quite nice food (although they do serve it on chopping boards, so expect the price of your meal to be bumped up by £2!).

I won't be rushing back, but i can see this as a nice summer watering hole for those living and working around southwark/London Bridge. Might be worth checking out the Pub Quiz on Tuesday nights.

Qype: Macaron in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Cafes & Coffee Shops

For some reason i always assumed that "Macaron" (or "Boulangerie" as i call it) was part of the Pavement Cafe. It's not. Figured that out at the weekend.

They do an excellent croque monsieur in here and i can also recommend the sandwiches and pastries. For residents of clapham, this is a fantastic place to pick up a french stick in the morning (although it is kinda pricey).

A hidden gem of Clapham.

Qype: White Hart in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

The White Hart is a cracking pub and, even though i don't know Crystal Palace that well, i'm assuming it's one of the finest boozers in the area.

What makes it so good then?

Beers - Cracking selection of real ale (including locally sourced wandle and junction + classics like doom bar). The also stock German wheat beer Franziskaner which is always nice to see!

Roast - My roast dinner yesterday was outrageously big (but still very, very tasty). If you're coming here for your sunday dinner, i'd recommend skipping breakfast.

Quiz Machine - It wasn't switched on, but i'm sure it works. You score extra points in my book if you have a quiz machine ;)

Staff - Everyone seemed very friendly and our meals arrived relatively quickly given that they were quite busy.

I'll be back for the monday night pub quiz!

Qype: The Alma in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

If you've got a picture of Optimus Prime on the side of your pub, you're alright in my book :)

The Alma is a very nice little pub on church road in the heart of Crystal Palace. This boozer was our starting and finishing point for this weekends "London Classic" bike ride and was the perfect venue for drinking beers in the sunshine after the race.

We didn't try the food, but the beer selection was solid and the staff were very nice. What makes this place special though is the outdoor area. Enough space to seat at least 50, the Alma is a perfect pub for catching some rays on a warm sunday afternoon (i'm told they do barbecues too!)

I'll definitely be back.

Qype: All Bar One in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Bars

Either All Bar One has improved in recent years, or this place is an exception to the rule. I tend to avoid AB1 most of the time, but it was convenient at the weekend and i was actually pleasantly surprised. We felt very well looked after and the brunch hit the mark. I can highly recommend the scrambled eggs or eggs florentine. Both were delicious!

Qype: Pavement Cafe in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Cafes & Coffee Shops - Cafes - Eating & Drinking - Cafes & Coffee Shops

A quaint little cafe known and loved by the locals of Clapham. The place is a good 15 metres from my new house, so i have every reason to pick up fresh bread here and become a regular.

Good things about the Pavement Cafe:

- Great Full English Breakfast
- Awesome Apple Pie
- Proper English breakfast tea
- Friendly, smiley staff

Not so good things about the Pavement Cafe:

- It gets very busy at the weekend. Watch out for all the prams!
- It's not cheap, but hey, where is on the pavement?

I'll be back for sure. Very keen to try dinner here.

Qype: Travellers Inn in London

London

If your bus is delayed, this is probably where you'll end up. Plenty of places to sit and 4 ales on (although only 3 of the 4 were up and running when we went in). Whetherspoon's esq. decor and tired eyed, bored looking staff.

Victoria is desperately lacking good pubs (particularly off Buckingham palace road) and this is a fine example of a boozer that misses the mark quite badly. My quest for a good pub in SW1 continues....

Qype: Falcon in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

This is the pub you go to if you've a) missed your train and have to wait an hour for the next one b) You live in Clapham but you've had a boozy night in Richmond or Epsom and you fancy sneaking one in before heading home.

It's noisy and always very busy, but the crowd is usually friendly and i've always been served quickly. Food is pretty bog standard, but if you're in a bit of a hurry it might be a good option. Try the Fish n' Chips!

In summary - This is a commuters pub. If you want a Gastro pub or somewhere a bit more low key, i'd recommend heading down to Northcote road.

Qype: The Gunmakers in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

I think my exact words on the tube last night were "Knights of Columbus! That pub was awesome!" and i stick to my guns this morning - The Gunmakers is one of the best pubs i've visited in quite some time. Awesome staff (with great banter), great food, locally sourced ales, interesting history and getting a seat on a Friday night isn't a complete nightmare.

The real ale tasting event last night was fantastic. So much so that from now on i'm going to suggest all future events must include consumption of at least 4 pints of bitter :)

I'll be back and i'll be bringing all my mates. If i could give 6 stars, i would.

Qype: The Fun Factory in London

Qype: St. John's House in London

London

A nice little venue with a cool "secret library" at the back of the venue. I came here for a birthday party on Saturday night and had a cracking time. Friendly staff, reasonably priced drinks... the only thing holding back St. John's house from 5 stars is the poor transport links (you're nearest tube station is quite a walk and we found it difficult to get a cab late on Saturday night).

All in all, a nice venue and a nice crowd.

Qype: Breads Etcetera in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Cafes & Coffee Shops - Cafes - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - British - English - Shopping - Food & Drink - Bakeries

So I finally came here at the weekend. I've been meaning to come in for breakfast for about a year now, but i've always been put off by the long queues of pashmina wearing peroxide 20 somethings and Hooray Henry's.

So what's the verdict then? Well, some things were excellent, some what you'd expect and some bits need a lot of work. Let me explain:

Excellent things:

- Delicious soft boiled eggs and very tasty bacon. Some of the best i've had in SW4.

- Tasty, soft bread which you can toast yourself at your table.

- Friendly, efficient staff who are willing to take the time to look after you

No so good things:

- Music. Absolutely terrible. Saturday morning at 10am is not the time to be playing shitty Euro House.

- Credit cards no accepted. I don't care who you are, if you're operating on Clapham High street you need to accept multiple forms of payment.

- The People. As i mentioned above, it's pretty cramped in here so you're going to have to listen to your neighbours conversation. Unfortunately, Breads Etcetera attracts the kind of people that give Clapham a bad name. Don't say i didn't warn you!

I'll be back, but i think i will be coming back at a time when it's not quite so busy and I'll be sure to sit next to the stereo so i can persuade the staff not to play crap music.

Qype: The Lock Tavern in London

London - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

This is a great pub/bar for outdoor drinking on sunday's or summer evenings. It gets absolutely rammed at the weekend, so be prepared to stand (but the flip side is that most of the best live bands tend to play on Friday and Saturday nights). Good selections of beers (Ale in bottles only though) and friendly staff.

If you're in London and you're with a big group of friends, I'd highly recommend dropping by here for a pint or two!

Qype: Gee's Restaurant in Oxford

Oxford - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - Gourmet - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - International

I had one of the best burgers i think i've ever had at Gee's. Served on a wooden board, the burger was pink, tender, massive and delicious. We were a big group (12 in total i think) and the staff were quick, friendly and we were all served within 20 minutes.

The setting is gorgeous and perfect for a summers day in Oxford. The conservatory area seats about 40 in total and is by far the best place to sit.

Highly recommended. I'll be back!

Qype: Chadwick's Organic Butchers in London

London - Shopping - Food & Drink - Butchers

Now this is an awesome butcher.

I just got back from Chadwick's in Balham and my housemates are in the kitchen busily preparing the beautiful joint of beef we bought this morning. The folks Chadwick's were delightful and took the time to help us with selecting the right cut of meat (the banter was good too). They also have a deli section here - chorizo, olive, local cheeses, chutneys and much, much more.

A journey well worth making and one of the few butchers in SW London open for most of Sunday. An easy 5 stars.

Check out my review of Chadwick's Organic Butchers - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Secondo in London

London

If Secondo stays open for longer than 6 months i will eat my hat. Is it a cafe? Is it a vintage clothes shop? Are they selling scooters? I'm just not sure..... What i do know is that Secondo is almost always empty and must be feeling the pain from the economic downturn.

I wish them all the best, but if they want to make money they're going to have to pick one of the above and nail it. My advice - Go for the coffee shop option. Cafe Nile across the road seem to be doing pretty well and this part of the high street is crying out for nice cafes and coffee shops. I guess we'll have to wait and see :)

Check out my review of Secondo - I am ahunter - on Qype
