Qype: The Windmill on the Common in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

Back in the day, The Windmill was always that pub which promised everything and delivered nothing. Fantastic location but a tatty interior, poor food and a bad selection of beers. Well i'm pleased to say that they have seriously raised their game in recent years and it is now a fantastic summer pub. Good selection of ciders and beers on tap and seriously good burgers. Probably the best in Clapham (which is pretty good as the burgers in the People's Republic are hard to beat). The pub still occupies the same old spot in the middle of the common and they have expanded the outdoor seating area to accommodate at least 50 or 60 now which is great (but you'll still find most people straying onto the common with plastic glasses). The inside of the pub has had a SERIOUS makeover (i think this happened about 18 months ago) and looks infinitely better than it used to - although you might argue it has lost some of its rustic charm.

The only thing holding The Windmill back from 5 stars is the cost and the service. Beer and wine seems about 50-60p more expensive than other pubs in Clapham and the bar service, in my experience, is usually quite clumsy and slow. Still, a cracking pub and the place to be on a sunny saturday afternoon.

Qype: Cafe Coco in Oxford

Oxford - Cafes & Coffee Shops - Cafes - Pubs & Bars - Bars - Cocktail Bars

Quite surprised i haven't review Cafe Coco in Oxford yet! This was a regular stomping ground for me (and i'm sure it still is for student living on Cowley road). At one point, i'm pretty sure 4 of my mates were working here. Never managed to blag any free pizza though! Speaking of the pizza, it's fantastic. Probably the best on Cowley road. Try the Calzone, and like Elliot Castro says, "try not to convulse with joy".

Qype: Spice Fusion in London

London - Restaurants - Take Away

Really, really good indian takeaway. We ordered from Spice fusion last night and the food was fantastic. I can personally recommend the Chicken Korma. The garlic naan bread is definitely worth ordering too. If you are in Stockwell/Clapham/Kennington and you don't feel like leaving the sofa, i would definitely recommend giving these guys a call!

Qype: Ed's Easy Diner in London

London - Restaurants - Fast Food & American - Restaurants - Take Away

I've been to my fair share of authentic diners in California and although Ed's doesn't really match up on "all american service", the burgers are great and the atmosphere spot on. I was very tempted to try the "oreo cookie milkshake", but i managed to hold back. Man, i should have tried that milkshake! The burgers are very tasty (and pretty cheap too) and it was great see heinz ketchup and French's American mustard perched on the counter ready to be squirted over my chips and burger. All in all a very good lunch.

My only feedback to Ed's would be -

1. Don't charge me 50p extra for free refills. Come on, it's 50p! This would never happen in the US.

2. As mentioned above, the only thing i felt let down by was the service. Ok, ok, i'm not going to get a 65 year old, mid western lady with a cigarette hanging from her lips shouting back into the kitchen for "2 hogsnots with the works and a couple a' boilermakers", but i was at least expecting a bit of American cheers and customer service. Don't get me wrong, the service wasn't bad, it just didn't feel right.

All in all, tasty burgers, great music, killer location and definitely worth stopping by if you are craving a burger in Soho.

Qype: Gurkhas Diner in London

London

When i called The Gurkha's Diner on Saturday i was amazed by the friendliness of the staff on the phone. The girl i spoke to was uber polite and was keen to chat alot and gauge what i was interested in eating. She made some great suggestions and i felt really comfortable with the food i was ordering even though i had never eaten here before. Worlds away from the usual "bish, bash, bosh" take away telephone manner i am so used to.

The food arrived quickly (within 20 mins) and was piping hot. I had the the Gurkha Curry, Garlic Naan and spiced brown rice. It was all really, really good. Word of advice - 1 serving of rice (£2.50) could probably serve a family of 12. We had lots left over!

Generally very good. I will be ordering again from the Gurkha Diner soon!

Qype: Cycle Surgery in London

London - Cars & Bikes - Bicycles

A decent bike shop on the 1st floor of Selfridge's in central London. The staff in here were friendly, knowledgeable and they helped me pick out the right bike for me. As well as having a decent stock of road and mountain bikes, they also have a great selection of peripherals - locks, lights, speedometers, clothing etc. etc.

If you buy a bike from cycle surgery, in addition to getting a 1 year warranty, you can also pop back in to any of the branches in the first 2 months for a free bicycle check-up. I thought that was a cool idea.

Highly recommended.

Qype: Apex Cycles in London

London - Cars & Bikes - Bicycles

Excellent, personal service with a smile. The staff in here are willing to take all the time needed to make sure your questions are answered and that you are satisfied with the bike or equipment you are buying. Can't wait to buy my bike tomorrow! I hope they are open on Bank Holiday Monday's!

Qype: Evans Cycles in London

London - Cars & Bikes - Bicycles

I've been looking to buy a bike for a couple weeks now and i've popped into Apex Cycles a few times to look at the bikes and ask the staff a few questions. The selection of racing bikes (in the shop) is generally quite poor and unless you are willing to spend over £700 it is unlikely you will find a suitable bike. The staff seem enthusiastic at first, but after asking them a couple of basic questions i seriously doubted their knowledge and ability to provide good advice. The in-store interactive search tool is laughable. It reminded me alot of Jack Nicklaus super swing golf that you would find in arcades in the early 90's. Impossible scrolling, completely unintuitive interface and it takes about 10 minutes for a page to load.

I've now decided to boycott Apex Cycles completely and i will instead be buying my bike from Apex Cycles which is only a couple of doors down Clapham High Street. The service a selection in here is infinitely better and the prices seem more competitive too. If only they were open on a Sunday.....

Qype: Maison Bertaux Ltd in London

London - Food & Drink - Coffee & Tea Shops - Cafes & Coffee Shops - Cafes

A lovely little cafe and a wonderfully gregarious sister combination running the show. Some may say the Maison Bertaux is pricey, and it's true, the actual prices aren't even on display! But who cares, this place oozes charm and is a stark contrast to most of the other establishments dotted along Greek street. The tea is fantastic and the pastries are some of the finest i have had in London.

The antithesis of starbucks and my new favourite place for coffe and cake in central London.

Qype: Heathrow Express in London

London - Travel & Hotels - Airports

Yes, Yes it's expensive. £1 per minute is pretty darn steep. In fact, i haven't done the maths, but this could be the most expensive per mile train journey on earth. I can't really think of anything that would top it. Anyone?

Expense aside, my experience of the Heathrow Express has always been positive. The trains are fast, air conditioned, they show the BBC news and weather, plenty of luggage space and you can get from T5 to Central London in less than 20 minutes. Thank the Lord! No more never ending tube journey's through Acton town, Hounslow east, Hounslow central, Hounslow middle west, Hounslow south by south west, Hounslow central Hounslow etc..

But all things this good come at a price. Pricey, but as long as i only go to Heathrow every couple of months, i think i'm wiling to pay....

Qype: J Sainsburys plc in London

London - Food & Drink - Supermarkets

I agree with Ricardinihio. Top quality, high five worthy check out staff + It's open alot later on a sunday than the big Sainsbury's up the road.

Food stock remains poor, even with the addition of more shelf space. Maybe they could knock through the ceiling and turn the flats into a deli/rotiserrie area?

Qype: Shuh in London

London - Fashion - Shoes

I am NOT the best shopper in the world. I'm famous among friends for doing my "yearly shop". Managed to pick up 2 pairs of shoes in "Shuh" in about 15 minutes. Perfect. Staff were great (even though the shop was heaving) and shoes were good quality, comfortable and reasonably priced. I hate shoe shopping, but if i have to, Shuh is now the place i will go.

Qype: Wildwechsel in Hamburg

Hamburg - Cafes & Coffee Shops - Cafes - Pubs & Bars - Bars - Cocktail Bars

A decent enough cocktail bar in St. Pauli. I didn't get to sample the famous absinthe cocktail last night, but the wheat beer was spot on. Barmaid was very friendly and, even though the place was very quiet, it stilled retained some atmosphere. Oh, and they have free wifi. Always a bonus in my book!

Qype: Cafe Paris in Hamburg

Hamburg - Cafes & Coffee Shops - Cafes

A good steak, but not a great steak. Mountains of chips and nice fresh salads makes this place a solid 3 star restaurant. It can be very noisy in Cafe de Paris and the service leaves a little to be desired. I think i'll go back. The meatballs looked delicious!

Qype: Jazz after dark in London

London - Nightlife - Music Venues - Pubs & Bars - Bars

This Jazz club is very small, but usually very good. We staggered in here on Thursday night to catch some late night jazz and managed to score a table about 4 feet from the stage. The band was good but not great (i've seen much better in here) but the waitresses were attentive and the cocktails cheap. All in all a much cheaper alternative to Ronnie Scott's and actually a very good night out for only £5.

Check out my review of Jazz after dark - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: The Delhi Brasserie in London

London - Restaurants - Take Away - Indian

Mediocre at best. The Kingfisher tasted like 2 day old bath water and the curries could have been bought in Sainsbury's and microwaved 5 minutes before we ate. Service was very slow (but in their defence it was fairly busy and we did have a big group). This place is a bit of a tourist trap and i wouldn't recommend it. With Red Fort and Imli just around the corner, you'd be mad not to go somewhere else.

Check out my review of The Delhi Brasserie - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Lamb and Flag in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

An OK pub, but superlatives aren't really necessary here. This part of rose street is less of a street and more of a "scag alley way" in my opinion. The pubs only outdoor area spills out onto the street which struggles to get any sunlight and is generally pretty manky. I have no idea how the Lamb and Flag attract so many people to the festering cesspit (ok, maybe i'm being a little harsh now).

So what has the pub got going for it?

- Lots of ale on tap
- A nice upstairs bit with great floor to ceiling windows
- friendly staff and friendly punters

Decent enough, but shouldn't every pub have this? I must admit, i'm not itching to go back.

Check out my review of Lamb and Flag - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: LAB Bar in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Bars - Cocktail Bars

The South African bar tender in LAB bar is particularly good. Very keen to experiment and excellent knowledge of cocktails. I tried a Cool Hand Luke and a Mojito. Both were excellent, but cocktails like this come at a price. You'd be hard pressed to find a decent drink for less then £8. Regardless, i would definitely recommend this place if you are thinking of going for cocktails in Soho. They order food in from the Japanese restaurant next door. It would be great to see some bar nibbles in future too!

Qype: Patisserie Valerie in London

London - Food & Drink - Bakeries

I know that Patisserie Valerie has amazing cakes, pastries and coffee. I know that they pile their sandwiches high and the orange juice is sweet and fresh. But if you tell a customer that you are going to to serve him and then choose to ignore said customer for 20mins in a nearly empty cafe, you score 1 star. There is no question in my mind that the food is delicious here. The service in my experience though, is laughable....

Qype: Rose and Crown hairdressers in London

London - Beauty & Wellness - Hairdressers

Ordinarily i'm a £7 short back and sides man. If you've read any of my other hairdresser reviews you'll know that i have very happy hair and that i've struggled to find a decent barber in Germany. Well, I will no longer be getting my haircut in Germany because i have found my perfect barber in Covent Garden. The Rose and Crown must be one of the best hairdressers in London. Fantastic value, very personal treatment and excellent prices. Cheers Rick. I'll definitely be coming back.

Qype: Fox and Anchor in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs - Restaurants - British

I love pubs that serve beer in silver tankards. The Fox and Anchor immediately get brownie points from me for this. Great selection of ales too, so every box is ticked on the drinking front. The food isn't too shabby either. Very traditional and very british. Pies, bangers and mash, kippers, fish and chips... lovely. I opted for the burger, which was piled high and very tasty. Some of the other portion sizes around the table looked a little bit meagre, but i think everyone agreed that the food was delicious. Service was ok, but not breaktaking which is why, like Hinchcliffe, i am holding back on 5 stars.

All in all a great gastropub. Probably one of the best in London.

Qype: travelzoo in London

London - Travel & Hotels - Travel Agents

TravelZoo is actually one of my favourite travel agents/travel websites. They send round a weekly newsletter highlight the top deals from all UK holiday and filght providers. These are super exclusive deals which most of the travel agents make a loss on, so you are almost guaranteed a rock bottom price. The site is simple, easy to use and i have never had a performance prob on the site. Why can't all travel agents be like this, huh?

Qype: Fulham Palace in London

London - Arts & Entertainment - Day Trips

I agree with Bobbadog, Fulham Palace's charm lies in its grounds. Acres of herb gardens, shady lawns, wisteria and oak trees. Perfect for a warm summers day (no ball games though! D'oh!)

The estate was owned by the Bishops of London for over 1300 years and the Palace was the Bishops country home from at least the 11th century (and their main residence from the eighteenth century until 1975). Fulham Palace is now managed jointly by Hammersmith and Fulham Council and the Fulham Palace Trust, though it is still owned by the Church of England. With all this backing i am amazed (although much of the grounds are well kept) that they can let the green houses fall into such disrepair! Oh, well... Maybe they need to get a lottery grant.

During WWII quite a bit of the palace grounds were converted into allotments which stretch through the middle of Bishop's Park. We didn't get a chance to venture in, but they look in good condition and you could see a few locals digging away from the pavement.

Must come back for some lunch out on the patio of Fulham Palace. We saw couples digging into lobster and other delicious looking treats (i bet it's pricey). Perhaps i will just pack a picnic and a frisbee....

Qype: Bishop's Park in London

London - Arts & Entertainment - Parks

This is a fantastic park. I'm really surprised that Sunday was the first time i have ever visited! The picturesque Bishop's Park stretches along the banks of the Thames from Craven Cottage (home of Fulham FC) down to Putney bridge. As well as containing Fulham Palace, as The Duck rightly observed, the park is packed with tennis courts, rose gardens, playgrounds, bowling greens and much, much more. In fact, the tennis courts looked to be some of the finest public courts in London (up yours Lambeth!). This must also be an incredible vantage point for the Oxford vs. Cambridge boat race. I can definitely imagine the cycle lane brimming with spectators!

One final fun fact - Bishop's Park also features in the film "The Omen". The park plays host to the gruesome end of a local priest! Best not to walk around these parts after dark i'd say ;)

I wouldn't always book a holiday through Thomas Cook (i tend to use expedia more these days) but when it comes to foreign exchange, TC is still top dog. Qype: The Langley in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Bars - Nightlife - Clubs

This place is coooool. Not my usual kind of haunt (i'm a pub guy) but what a fantastic space. We went and checked out the cavernous Langley today and were bamboozled by the size and variety of sections. Main bar, second bar, dining area, VIP area, bit for hen parties, bit for a romantic meal, Super VIP area etc. etc.

I'm yet to sample the food or drink here, but after meeting the lovely Manager Maria, i'm sure this place is a winner. More to come after i go for a cocktail here at the weekend!

Qype: Big Easy & Crabshack in London

London - Restaurants - Fast Food & American

One of the best burgers i have had in London. The Kobe Burger may cost £12, but it blows GBK et al. completely out of the water. Super tasty beef, tangy cheese and a bun that doesn't fall apart under the strain of the almighty burger. Perfect.

Fun, very American, atmosphere and friendly waitresses. I thought they did particularly well with our big group! I will definitely be going back in a couple months time to take part in the rib eating competition. I think the record is 9 and i feel like i have a pretty decent shot ;)

Qype: Penny Markt in Hamburg

Hamburg - Food & Drink - Supermarkets

I'm not really sure what to make of this super cheap, Aldi esq. supermarket. If you're after charcoal, paper cups, peanut butter or cheap garden furniture i'd recommend it. But i certainly wouldn't suggest Penny Markt as a place to do your weekly food shop! Almost all frozen food and very little choice. The best thing Penny Markt hag going for it is that it is open on a Sunday! A veritable miracle in Germany.....

Qype: Freebird Burritos in London

London

Awesome burritos. I went for the steak and black bean option. Delicious! 2 years ago London used to be seriously lacking good places for mexican food (particularly burritos). But now with El Burrito and Freebird, Soho is the place to go to satisfy cravings for Mexican food. Best of all, if you give them a business card, you get a free burrito! And not a crappy little sample size burrito, a monstrous "oh my god i might have a stroke" burrito. Brilliant. I'll be shouting about these guys to all my mates.

Qype: Gourmet Burger Kitchen in London

London - Restaurants - Fast Food & American

One of the better GBK's in London in my book. The staff in here are super friendly and the burgers are always well made. I can't decide whether i like GBK or the fine burger company better, but as this place in a stones throw from my house, i think it wins my vote. Don't be afraid to customize your burger! I once went in here, on a particularly low day i might add, and ordered a bacon, cheese, egg, barbecue sauce and chilli con carne burger. Gluttonous. Repulsive some might say. But just the job if you're looking for a bit of comfort food.

Qype: Papaya in London

London - Restaurants - Thai

Hmmmm..... Don't believe the hype i'd say. Perhaps we caught Papaya on an off day today, as it seem like most other people on Qype LOVE this place. My chicken massaman curry was dry (as was the rice) and it was generally a bit tasteless. I'll give them another shot at some point, but generally i think there are better thai place to eat (for a similar price) in this part of town. A very generous 3 stars......

Qype: The Wolseley in London

London - Cafes & Coffee Shops - Cafes - Pubs & Bars - Bars - Restaurants - British

I felt quite nostalgic in the Wolseley this morning as i tucked into my Egg and Soldiers. It's been about 15 years since i've had this breakfast delight and i really forgot how much i missed dunking soldiers into a nice runny egg! The Wolseley is very posh. I must have been the only one in their wearing cruddy jeans and converse. In fact, i'm kinda surprised they let me in to begin with! Maybe they thought i was a rockstar. Yeah, that must be it.....

Anyway, breakfast at the Wolseley must be experienced by visitors and Londoners alike. Very attentive service in a fantastic setting right next door to the Ritz. It's pricey, but well worth it. Very tempted to make this a monthly fixture! Should probably speak to the bank manager first mind.....

I'm a pub man, but if i go into bars in Clapham, Rinky Dink is on my hitlist. I'm very lucky in that it's about 50m from my front door. Easily within staggering distance :) Great selection of cocktails and open til 2am on Friday and Saturday night. It's particularly good here in the summer months as this part of Clapham High St. turns into an Ibiza esq. street carnival on warm summer evenings. A great bar for hanging out outside and people watching.

All in all, highly recommended.

Qype: BILLARD SUNSET in Hamburg

Hamburg - Nightlife - Snooker & Pool

This is one of those places where the walls have turned yellow and the seat cushions musty from years of tobacco smoke. But that's the only negative thing about Billiard Sunset. 13 full size pool tables in total (+ 1 giant table, even bigger than a snooker table). Cheap pitchers of beer, friendly/flirty barmaids and a good atmosphere. I seldom go to Hoheluftchaussee, but i think i will be coming back to this part of town whenever i have billiard craving. A fun friday evening activity.

Qype: The Banana Bungalow in San Diego

San Diego

I haven't been to the Banana Bungalow in about 2 years, but i felt compelled to review it after my housemate opted for the comfy motel option over the beachside beauty of the BB. He's off in 2 weeks time and i'm sure he is making a monumental mistake not staying at this amazing youth hostel. I don't care how old you are, who you're travelling with or how long you are staying for - this is possibly the best place to stay on the west coast of the USA. Hell, it may even be one of the best hostels in the world. Ok, i think you get my point. Here are some details -

- Right on the beach with an amazing sun deck overlooking the pacific

- About $25 per night (dorm room). Double rooms get booked up very quickly.

- Barbecues, theme parties and events happening every night. You'll never get bored.

- Surf schools either side of the hostel

- A very short walk from all the best nightlife in San Diego. Check out Moondoggies!

- Super friendly staff. Always looking to go the extra mile.

- Hooters is located directly behind the hostel.

All in all, an amazing place to stay. I've been here 3 times and as long as they will let me in, i will always be a guest when i'm in San Diego!

Qype: Hallo Pizza Hamburg GmbH in Hamburg

Hamburg

Very mediocre pizza and it took well over an hour to arrive. The cheese on my pizza kentucky looked to have cooled and solidified sometime in 1987 and the pepperoni had a consistency much like a scab. Now, if they delivered this pizza quickly, they would have got 2 stars, but as i had to wait so long, they're getting the lowest grade possible.

Never again.

Question - Did Locco steal their outdoor seating arrangements from one of the beach clubs? Sun loungers just seem a little bit out of place on one of the busy streets of the Schanze! Excellent mojito making speed. I think the barmaid made about 8 in 3 minutes. BAFFLING.

Decent, cheap pizza. I was a little disappointed i couldn't try the jumbo or family sizes, but we shared 6 30cm pizzas (between 6 of us) which was just right. The waitress was friendly and attentive, the pizzas came within about 10 minutes and at 5 euros a pop, this could just be the bargain pizza place of the century.

Qype: Rubicon in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

Ended up in the Rubicon on Saturday night for a friends party. We hired the downstairs basement/function room which was great! The basement accommodates 30-40 comfortably and the staff will come down and serve you (albeit fairly infrequently). Cocktails are made well and quickly (Mojito's were particularly good) and a great location only a stones throw from Surbiton station. Highly recommended if you are a cocktail bar person. If you are into pubs, then check out one of the other establishments along Maple road.

Qype: New China Restaurant in London

3 stars from me. Service was, hmmmmm, unusual. When i asked for tap water, i thought the waitress was going to slap me. The food came quickly though and was pretty tasty. I can definitely recommend the Chicken in black bean sauce. Lots of seating in this place, so might be a good restaurant to visit on a friday night. But, like CaribQueen says - Chinatown can definitely do better.

Qype: The Breakfast Club in London

London - Restaurants - International

I really like the Breakfast Club and i have had nice meals in the Islington and Soho branches. I'd recommend the All American Breakfast (Sausage, Bacon, 2 fried eggs, mushrooms, pancakes and maple syrup) with a Blue Monday smoothie and a nice cup of tea. Just the tonic if you have been out the night before! They miss out on 5 stars because they don't do table service and the drinks took a while to come. I will definitely be coming back though. This has to be one of the best breakfast places in Soho.

Oh, and they have free wifi. Always a + in my book.

Qype: Bunker Bar in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Bars

I wasn't too sure what to expect when we went into the Bunker Bar last night. The place was dead at about 6pm and felt a bit cold and soulless. But by 7, the place was rammed and the jugs of Freedom Organic Lager began to flow. This place is a microbrewery, so you won't find Foster's or Carling on tap here. Instead, you've got a choice of Freedom lager, organic, red and a couple others (names escape me) + a bunch of bottled beers from around the world.

Friendly, quick staff and the food looked delicious (although i didn't actually try any). Great for big groups of people, just remember to book a table!
