Qype: Blackwell's Bookshop in London

London - Shopping - Books

A decent enough Blackwell's which seems to be well stocked up for the Christmas period. I popped in this afternoon looking for a gift for my dear mother and managed to find a couple of good books and a calendar (i hope she doesn't read this before the 25th!). I've always found the prices to be reasonable in Blackwell's but a *quick tip* - you're much better off popping into one of the many second hand book shops along charing cross road. Excellent value and, on the whole, very friendly staff.

Qype: Beringer Tame Search & Selection in Reading

Reading - Services - Jobs - Recruitment Agencies

I am a BIG fan of Beringer Tame. I have used them a few times before and have always had fantastic results. Patrick and his team are always highly professional and are never afraid to go the extra mile to make sure the right CV's land on your desk. Beringer Tame specifically target the Internet Marketing industry, but if you've ask nicely they are never afraid to cast a wider net for the right client.

Highly recommended. A fantastic ROI whenever i have used them.

Qype: The John Snow in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

A very agreeable little Sam Smith's pub. Went in here on friday night with some work people and had a blast. Word of warning - Alpine Lager give you massive hangovers. Ok, it's cheap (about £1.60 a pint) but don't say i didn't warn you! I like it how you have to duck and weave around this bar. Lots of low ceilings and wooden tables. A proper, cheap english boozer right in the middle of town.

Qype: The Sun in London

London - Restaurants - British

The Sun has gone up in my estimation in recent months. I had very decent cheeseburger in here on saturday night and the "Xmas Pud" seasonal ale was delicious (although i'm not sure i could drink more than 1). Staff are friendly and the crowd is young. In the summer, the beer garden gets absolutely rammed (very popular with people from clapham common looking for a place to drink as the evening draws in).

I'll be back.

Qype: la tasca in london

london - Restaurants - Tapas

Hmmm.... I'm not sure i agree with the other reviewers here. La Tasca used to be a great Tapas place (well, it certainly felt great when i was a poor student). Either my taste buds have matured since my student days, or this place has gone seriously down hill in recent years. The patatas bracas were dry and tasteless, the veg felt like it was definitely cooked from frozen and the other meat dishes were very mediocre.

They get 2 stars, because the service was reasonable. Our authentic Spanish waiter looked after us very well despite the shortcomings of the food.

I really can't see myself going back.

Qype: Bar Shu in London

London - Restaurants - Chinese

Some of the nicest Sichuanese food i have ever had. I'd highly recommend the Gongbao Chicken and if you have deep pockets, and are up for indulging yourself, the Shuizhu fish (basically cod with 1000 chillis on it. Pretty darn hot!) is excellent. So the food here gets 5 stars, the service probably gets 3 stars.

If you're in china town/soho and are craving something a bit different, Bar Shu is definitely a decent bet.

Qype: Eat Drink Talk in London

London - Education - Culinary Schools

Let's be clear - I am not a good cook. I do a half decent fry up and that's about it. My cupboards are filled with food stuffs from Dolmio, Heinz and Kraft. I don't think i've cooked an "actual meal" in about 2 weeks.

So imagine my consternation when i was asked to cook the following menu -

Arabian Flatbread with Amlou
Spice Roast Pumkin with Chermoula and Lemons
Chicken, Olive and Sweet Potato Tagine
Couscous with Dried Fruit and Nuts
Orange Almond Cakes with Rosewater Creme Fraiche

I don't even know what half of those words mean! Thankfully we had the wonderful Jennifer Klinec guide us through the evening as well as provide a decent chunk of friendly banter and stories. By the end of the night i felt fit to burst, a little bit tipsy and a little bit more confident about cooking for myself and my friends (some sort of gourmet fry up perhaps....).

I cannot recommend Eat Drink Talk highly enough. Perfect for an office Christmas party or just a bit of fun with friends. I will definitely be coming back!

Qype: Apartment 195 in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Bars

If you're thinking about having a private party on the King's Road, Apartment 195 is probably a decent shout. The upstair bar and lounge area can accommodate about 150 people, the ceilings are high and the staff are very friendly. It did get a bit stuffy in here as the night wore on, but that would be my only gripe. A well stocked bar and plenty of places to sit down. Shame it shuts so early on a Friday night!

Qype: Mamilanji in London

London - Nightlife - Clubs

Meh.......

Ended up here last night after an engagement party just down the road in Apartment 195. Mamilanji is a classic swanky, OTT, south ken trust fund brigade nightclub. £20 to get in and you can expect to hear "If you're not on the guest list, you're not coming in" from most of the doormen. Once we finally talked ourselves in, we made our way to the bar. 2 bottles of beer and a vodka and coke - £20 please. Does everything in this place cost 20 bloody quid!? And don't even think about ordering cocktails. I gazed across the bar to see one of my friends having a "head in hands moment" as the barman handed him 35 pence change from his crisp fifty pound note.

Ok, you get it. It's expensive. So what are the good bits?

- Nice roof terrace with heaters during the winter
- Some half decent live music in the upstairs bar on friday's
- Seats! Even though we came in at midnight we could still find a seat which was nice.
- Pretty people (if that's what blows your hair back)

If you read my reviews, you will know this is not my kind of place. But i guess it might be some peoples cup of tea. I won't be going back in a hurry and i like to think that even if i won the lottery or discovered some hidden trust fund, i still wouldn't hang out here.
