Qype: Kerala in London

London - Restaurants - Take Away - Indian

This place is handily right next door to our office. Woo hoo! I was expecting bog standard indian food but when i looked at the menu i actually had no idea what to order! No chicken tikka masala? No garlic naan? No Kormas? I was out of my comfort zone....

Thankfully the waiter guided us through the menu and what arrived was actually very good indeed. Spicy, rich and lip smacking dishes (the bahjis were exceptional) and very informative and traditional service. Popular with locals and tourists alike, i can definitely see myself being on first name terms with the staff by the end of the year :)

Qype: The Cock in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

If we'd been able to find a better place to stand last night i probably would have given The Cock another star. But as it turned out we were stuck right in the toilet flight path and found ourselves shuffling to avoid people coming and going from the gents for most of the evening. Like most Sam Smith's pubs in this area (The Fitzroy Tavern and The Champion to name two), The Cock gets very busy between about 6-8pm and then seems to empty out almost entirely by 9pm. I've never really been able to explain this. Where does everyone go!?

side note - Watch out for Alpine lager. More than 4 pints of this stuff and you will have a world ending hang over in the morning.

Qype: Match Bar in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Bars - Cocktail Bars

I almost had a seizure when i discovered that i got no change from £20 when i ordered 3 small bottles of beer and a glass of sauvignon blanc (the wine was £6 glass and the bottles of beer £4.50). This may be central London, but charging these kind of prices is absolutely insane. Lord knows what a cocktail would have set me back. At least the bar staff were friendly.

Anyway, apart from the oddly priced drinks menu, this place is quite cool. Decent music and lots of places to sit (although you'll be had pressed to find a seat on a thursday or friday night). Yet to try the food, but i'm told it's good.

Qype: Käsespezialitäten in Hamburg

Hamburg - Food & Drink - Delicatessen - Food & Drink - Cheese Shops

Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese!

Kasespezialaten is exceptionally cheesy. Wafts of camembert, gruyere and raclette choke the air in this tiny oasis of dairy goodness. No English spoken here, but that doesn't matter. Pointing and gesturing tends to get you what you want and at the right size. Oh, and they have cheddar! Only mild cheddar i should add, but still, better than a kick in the face. Also a great place for fresh eggs and milk.

Check out the pics!

Qype: Luba Luft in Hamburg

Hamburg - Pubs & Bars - Bars - Cocktail Bars

"If you find yourself alone, riding through green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled, for you are in Elysium"

Sweaty Christ this bar is good. Like many of the English reviewers on this thread, I'm amazed i didn't discover Luba Luft sooner! Very cool decor mixing mame tables, chandeliers, traditional sofas and high stools (sounds weird, but seriously, it works). The staff are AMAZINGLY friendly and i cannot believe how well we were looked after last night. Free shots, personalized cocktails, trivial pursuit, delicious snacks and much, much more. This bar is awesome. It's my new Hamburg local and i'm going to go back as much as possible.

If the Burj Al Arab can be awarded 7 stars, then i am giving the same rating to the Luba Luft. @Phil - can we make an expection to the 5* limit on Qype?

Qype: Cafe Vinothek Südhang in Hamburg

Hamburg - Restaurants - International - Restaurants - Wine Bars - Pubs & Bars - Bars - Cocktail Bars

I nice little French restaurant tucked away on Sussanestrasse. The linguini with chicken and herbs was actually very good. Perfect portion size and tasty (a little bit oily perhaps). Service was polite and reasonably quick (for Hamburg) and the waitresses are fluent in English. Extensive wine list, although very few "good" French wines i am told by our resident Frenchman :)

I'm quite optimistic that i will come back (if only to try the delicious looking steaks that my compadres were tucking into!)

Qype: Prince Of Wales in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

Like mattygroves, i was also in the Prince of Wales in Putney recently and the Black Sheep was also off! Shame, because it's a delicious beer. Still, this is a half decent pub. Expect to pay Putney prices though for food and drink. A very good option if you are in and around East Putney tube station.

Qype: Erikas-eck in Hamburg

Hamburg - Restaurants - German - Pubs & Bars - Pubs - Food & Drink - Catering

The perfect midnight snack. Volkswagen sized schnitzels, mounds of fried potatoes and more wheat beer than you can shake a stick at. I'm amazed that i have only just discovered Erika's, but i'm sure this well now take precedence over the majority of late night dining options in Hamburg.

Full marks.

Qype: Ibis Hamburg St. Pauli Messe in Hamburg

Hamburg - Travel & Hotels - Hotels

The Ibis in St. Pauli, Hamburg is a simple and cheap hotel that gets the basics right. Rooms are a decent size, the bed and pillows are comfortable and the hotel is kept very clean. The front desk staff were particularly friendly this morning and seemed quite amazed when i turned down the complimentary breakfast! "But sir, it is free....."

This is my home for next couple if days, so i will update this review if my opinion changes. While the Ibis is a far cry from the Ritz, they do the simple things well and so far so good!

Qype: Ursula Flamme, Christoph Bernhardt in Hamburg

Hamburg - Health - Doctors & Dentists - GP's

Well, i haven't quite had the experience that Phil had below, but i've always found Dr. B to be a friendly and knowledgeable GP. This is a very busy surgery, so you can expect a wait, but all in all i'd say this easily trumps most GP experiences i have had in the UK. Definitely recommended for expats in Germany.

Qype: The Greedy Buddha in London

London

The Greedy Buddha is a very nice little nepalese restaurant close to Parsons Green tube station. I came here last night with my family and we all ate very well and at very good value. The Nepalese curry was fantastic. I asked for mild which actually was pretty spicy, so lord knows what medium and hot will do to you! Vegetable samosas, onion bahjis and naan bread was all very good to. Service was slightly on the slow side which is why i have docked them a star, but all in all a good restaurant and one that i'm sure i will go back to.

Qype: Cafe Nile in London

London - Cafes & Coffee Shops - Cafes

Cafe Nile is good, but not outstanding. Excellent for sandwiches and juices, but that's about it. You would think they would do proper breakfast, but for some reason they have decided not to. I saw 3 people walk in this morning craving a full english, only to be turned away by the manager. The croissants are a bit weird too.

I'll be back for juice, but i will be heading the Clapham North or to Cafe Delight for other morning treats.

Qype: The Social in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Bars

Home of the world famous "hip hip karaoke". I can't believe last night was the first time i have ever been in the social!

It's very different in here, but i like it. Upstairs has rustic wood panelling on the walls with cute little booths (and an odd corridor seating area by the entrance) where as downstairs is smaller with another bar and this is where you will find the live music and karaoke. Excellent choice of lagers (including a delicious Italian one... the name escapes me, but it definitely was not peroni!).

I will be coming back and bringing friends!

Qype: Irolis Removal in London

London - Home Services - Removals

Fast, efficient and friendly. Wilson looked after us very well and helped us move office with as little stress as possible! The Irolis team have a fleet of large and small vehicles (vans to big trucks) and offer very competitive prices.

Highly recommended.

Qype: Kalared in Maidstone

Maidstone - Restaurants

Kudos to Kalared for putting up with us on Saturday night. We were a group of 12 making far too much noise and we were looked after exceptionally well. The service was polite, fast and efficient. The food itself was nice, but nothing to write home about. We had the Peking duck and a bunch of tasty starters which was all very agreeable. I felt slightly let down by the pancakes that came with the duck, but "hey ho".

All in all a decent chinese restaurant and somewhere i would recommend to friends.

Qype: London Underground blog in London

I'm afraid of the tube (seriously, i am!), but I bloody love this blog. Really interesting and quirky. Great stories, always well written with loads of fascinating trivia and tid bits. One of the few London blogs i try to read on a daily basis.

Qype: Perfect Charcoal Grill in Maidstone

Maidstone - Restaurants - Take Away

Ahhhh... the Perfect Charcoal Grill. Just what you need after a night on the lash in Kent's County town. The guys in here produced my kebab on saturday night really, really quickly (scarily, suspiciously quickly in fact). But it was piping hot and tasty and i disappeared into the Maidstone night with an armful of kebabs and a wide smile on my face. The food itself was tasty, but not breathtakingly so (usually i am very easily pleased when it comes to food after beer).

I'll go back, i'm just not sure when i will ever go back to Maidstone!

Qype: liquid nightclub in Maidstone

Maidstone - Nightlife - Clubs

If a nuclear war broke out and Liquid Nightclub in Maidstone was the only place left to shelter, i would seriously think twice about going in...... i'm not joking. This place is seriously crap. Drinks were overpriced, music was terrible and VIP treatment (@£20 per person) was about as good a value as a kick in the face. Speaking of kicks to the face, at about 2am on saturday night a bunch of local chavs decided it would be a good idea to start a fight with my friends on the dance floor. Completely unprovoked! So not only is Liquid a terrible nightclub, it also attracts rude, meat head, chavtastic punters - which gives it an entry into Andrew's "Top 5 worst clubs in Britain".

A terrible club. Nuf' said.

Qype: JP's Bar in Maidstone

Maidstone

A reasonably mediocre pub in the centre of Maidstone. JP's had no ale on last night. Both were "gone til monday" which is pretty inexcusable on a saturday night. The interior of the pub is very dated - old tattered sofas and chairs etc. Staff were nice though and they have one of those cool nut vending machines on the bar, so they score a couple points in my book :)

Not somewhere i will rush back to.

Qype: King Street Hotel in Maidstone

Maidstone - Travel & Hotels - Hotels

A very affordable little hotel right in the middle of Maidstone. We stayed here last night and managed to get a twin room with 2 full english breakfasts for £47. Bargain! The King street hotel is a bit dated inside (see pics) but all in all the staff were nice, the room was warm and it did just the job for a quick stop over in Kent's county town. Highly recommended if you are on a budget.

Qype: Punch & Judy in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

A pub which attracts bus loads of tourists, but has an absolutely killer balcony overlooking the Piazza. Overpriced and no sign of real ale when i was here last. Bog standard pub grub, nothing to write home about really. All in all a good place to take visit friends for a quick drink, but in this part of London there are literally hundreds of better pubs and places to eat in London.

Qype: Four Crosses Inn in Cannock

Cannock - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

Even though i haven't actually been to this pub, i feel it warrants a review as they do lunches for £1! How cool is that?

From the Guardian:

"The starters and desserts are all £1; the basic main courses are also £1, but there is a "homemade" option for £1.50 and a roast for £2.50. David Borton, a regular diner, calls the final option "going large"."

Pure, credit crunch busting genius!

Qype: Brixton Recreation Centre in London

London - Sport - Leisure Centres

I'm "told" Brixton Recreation Centre used to be a multi-story car park (well, that's what my flatmate says). It's kind of believable as this is probably the ugliest building in South London. That being said, the facilities are actually decent. 6 floors of sporting bliss to be precise. Squash, 5-a-side, basketball, badminton, swimming, gymnasium and much, much more. It's also very affordable and there are monthly fees. This definitely is NOT a premium health club (far from it), but it does have a little bit of Brixton charm and it's probably one of the only public sports clubs in south London with 6 squash courts, so i' happy!

Qype: Apogee Restaurant in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Bars - Restaurants - Gourmet

Ummmm.... It's -4'c today.... have these guys heard of central heating!? It was perishingly cold in here today. I mean really, really freezing. Service was reasonable (although we were the only ones in here) and the complimentary croissant was a nice touch. This coffee was ruined by the temperature in the dining area. Much like the groundhog, i won't be heading out here again until spring has well and truly set in....

Qype: The Windmill in Windlesham

Windlesham

A very nice pub and really quite unexpected. We were on the way back from the west country and instead of stopping off at one of the many service station dotted along the M3, we decided to look for a good pub. We stumbled upon the Windmill (just outside of camberley) and were delighted with the result. The food was excellent (huge, delicious Sunday roasts, the wild boar sausages also looked excellent) and fantastic, attentive service. London Pride and Landlord on tap and this place is literally 2 minutes off of the M3 at junction 3.

If you're heading west out of the city or you're heading back into London after a weekend in the countryside, i would highly recommend stopping off at the Windmill in Windlesham. An easy 5 stars.

Qype: Cobb Arms The Public House in Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

A very agreeable little pub right on the Cobb at Lyme Regis. The Cobb Arms couldn't have a more classically British seaside setting - fishing boats dotting in and out of the harbour, friendly west country faces and plenty of locally brewed real ale. The food is also very good (simple, but proper pub grub). I opted for the jacket potato with beans and local mature cheddar - It was excellent. My grandfather opted for the shrimp cocktail which he claimed was "the best in years" and my two brothers went for hearty sandwiches whoch could have easily fed 2! Oh, try the Copper Ale too. Fantastic real ale brewed only 12 miles from Lyme Regis!

Qype: Chequers Car Hire in London

London - Services - Taxi Companies

I'm usually an Addison Lee man when it comes to Taxis, but these guys are actually very good. Reliable, cheap and very friendly. I took a cab from Clapham to Fulham and it only cost me £8! (With other big companies it would be at least £15). The fleet of cars is modern and the drivers i have had have always been friendly.

Highly recommended if you live in South West London.

Qype: El Rincon Latino in London

London - Restaurants - Latin American - Colombian

A decent spot, although i have never eaten here. Plenty of bottled spanish beer and generally a very nice vibe. El Rincon Latino is set slightly back from the high street which (i think) is a good thing as you lose the clapham high street riff raff. Prices are good, ambience is great. A good date spot. I'll be coming back for food soon.

Qype: Tamesis Dock in London

London

The Tamesis, formerly The English Maid, is an old dutch barge situated between Lambeth and Vauxhall Bridge. I'm not sure whether this place functions as a normal bar during the week, but i definitely know that they host functions regularly.

We decided to head here for new years eve last night. The ticket was £50, but we felt it was worth it given the views of Westminster and the London Eye for the fireworks + the promise of free champagne. Now, i can imagine this being quite a cool place to hang out at on a nice, balmy summers evening. The roof of the barge is fantastic with plenty of seating, but it was a little less idyllic given that it was -2'c last night and i didn't bring any gloves! Anyway, i can't complain about the weather. I can however complain about -

The toilets - Pretty filthy and the urinals were in a terrible state from about 9pm onwards. One had to jump from one urinal to the other to prevent over flowing.

The food - If i pay £50 for a ticket, i don't expect to be served food from Iceland. EVERYTHING was deep fried. It was pretty revolting.

The free champagne? - With purchase of the ticket we were promised free champagne for groups of 6+. when i mentioned this to 2 of the bar staff at 11.30pm last night, both of them told me under no circumstances would they be giving away free champers. This made me very angry. In the end after speaking to the manager we were able to get some, but by that time it was almost midnight and we all felt a bit flustered. Massive breakdown in communication between management and staff it would seem.

Rant over.

In the Tamesis' defence, the view from the barge was phenomenal and the rest of the evening went well. I still feel ripped off though. This is a classic example of a bar trading off its location and forgetting about everything else.

I won't be coming back in a hurry.
