Qype: Soho House UK Ltd in London

London - Nightlife - Clubs

I went to Soho house for the first time last week. I didn't get to explore a huge amount, so i can only comment on the upstairs restaurant and the loos! We were well looked after and my cheeseburger (litmus test for new places if you don't ordinarily read my reviews) was very nice. Perfectly cooked and delicious. Nice balcony just off the dining room with some great views of London.

Summary - Better than the Hospital Club, not as good as Shoreditch house.

Qype: Imli Restaurant in London

London - Restaurants - Indian - Restaurants - Tapas

I quite like the idea of Indian style tapas. You're not going to get a monstrous bowl of curry and table sized naan bread in here, but if you're into trying lots of different things, i'd recommend it. They also do a great lunch special which is 3 tapas for £8 (more than enough food). I can highly recommend the coriander chicken curry and the bombay spiced vegetable. Both excellent. Service was a bit hit and miss and i thought the fact that our veggie friend couldn't freely pick and choose from the lunch time special menu was a bit odd. All in all though, a solid place for lunch in soho.

Qype: Bob Bob Ricard in London

London - Restaurants - British - Pubs & Bars - Bars

Oh sweet Jesus i think i've found Mecca. I have never (repeat never) been so well looked after in a London restaurant. Who ever hired the waitresses (particular the nice Canadian one) at Bob Bob Ricard deserves some sort of medal. These girls were all over the service, big time, without being OTT, fake or annoying. Now, i'm no Jedi Master, but I have seen seen Star Wars quite a few times, and i'm almost certain the staff here have received some kind of Yoda esq. mind training. All i had to do was think about eggs benedict, and they would appear. A slight slurp to indicate that i had reached the bottom of my tea cup, and what do you know, a fresh pot arrives moments later. Whether or not these girls were trained in the Dagaboh system i don't know, but their attentiveness and down home, "you boys want some lemonade" charm is what made the morning for me.

I could go on to tell you about the cute toasters on every table, the spectacular coffee or the little button which magics champagne to your table - but i think Urbanite and Hinchcliffe have done that pretty well below.

Some may moan about the cost of Bob Bob Ricard (£20 per person for breakfast), but to be honest, i'd pay double what i paid for service like that in London. Let's hope the same high standards remain as this place inevitably becomes more and more popular.

Qype: The Calf in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

One of my new favourite pubs in Clapham. The Calf is a great sunday pub - papers, board games, nice leather sofas that you can sink into and excellent food. I just had the roast which was fantastic (infinitely better than most places on Clapham high street). The staff are also really, really friendly and amazingly they serve Franziskaner which is one of my favourite wheat beers!

2 points holding the Calf back from 5 stars -

*Real Ale* - All real ale was off and the closest thing was Sierra Nevada (which i'm not that keen on). Surely Sunday is the most popular day! How can all your pumps be off!

*Baby Central* - The Calf seems to lure in the young couples from the Nappy Valley of Northcote road. Our table was surrounded by pushchairs and dribbling 1 year olds. Not the end of the world, but thought i'd mention it as it would annoy some people.

I'll be back and i'll be telling my friends!

Qype: The Exhibit Bar Ltd in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

Quite a nice little bar/restaurant actually. I hardly ever go into Balham and i was delighted to find a place like this with a bit of soul and quite a few young revellers (Hooray! Balham isn't just leafy streets and 30'somethings called Toby). Exhibit is actually a decent place to go out on a Friday night as long as you don't mind queuing a bit for drinks, i'd highly recommend it. I didn't get a chance to check out the restaurant or the cinema, but i'm told both are good. Lots of outdoor seating and it's free to get in (even after midnight).

All in all a surprisingly decent place. Must come back to check out the cinema....

Qype: bea's of bloomsbury in London

London - Cafes & Coffee Shops - Cafes

A great way to start the day. The pastries in Bea's are delicious and it's fantastic to see all of the fresh cakes coming straight out of the oven and waiting to cool on the side. I opted for english breakfast tea, fresh fruit and a croissant. Everything was perfect and the staff seem really nice. This also looks like a great place for gifts for girls. Nice looking gift boxes and treats in the window display. I'll be back!

Qype: Benihana in London

London - Restaurants - Japanese & Sushi

Just got back from a delicious dinner at Benihana. The atmosphere in here is great and the food even better. We were entertained by our Japanese chef that cracked jokes about immigration and would stop calling me "Big Guy" and my sister-in-law "Barbie" :) We started with mushrooms, onions and some delicious prawns (flicked into our mouths from 6 feet away!), followed by rib eye steak, egg fried rice and teriyaki chicken. The whole meal was delicious and even though it was quite expensive (worked out about £40 per person) i would still highly recommend saving up and checking this place out.

An easy 5 stars.

Qype: The Royal Victoria Place Shopping Centre in Tunbridge Wells

Tunbridge Wells - Shopping - Shopping Centres

The Royal Victoria Place Shopping Centre is a treasure of my youth. We used to take the bus from Cranbrook (about 45 minutes away) to spend saturday afternoons browsing the shops in this mall. My favourite shop in here was always Sport and ski. They were ALWAYS having a closing down sale and i was amazed to see that they are still open 10 years later and they are still closing down! I smell a rat ;) Anyway, the discounts are great and i still like the shop. No doubt throngs of people will be descending on the The Royal Vic in the next 4-6 weeks in the build up to christmas!

Qype: Be At One in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Bars

If you're looking for a place in Clapham to party on a Tuesday, this is it. We came in here last week and it was heaving! Felt a bit like a saturday night! Great selection of cocktails and generally a good vibe. I just wish it would move slightly up the hill a bit so it's closer to my house!

p.s watch out for the Clapham stereotypes - Popped collars, deck shoes and girls with brothers called Toby. This is Toffsville my friends.

Qype: Miami International Airport in Miami

Miami

I was a little bit disappointed with Miami International Airport. It had a distinct Heathrow terminal 2 feel and i couldn't believe the lack of facilities. The departure lounge had a small bookshop, a Burger King and a few empty vending machines. That was it! Crazy. The airport was clean mind and the security officials were infinitelty more polite than those you find in California. Generally a pretty crummy airport though.

Qype: Virgin Active in London

London - Sport - Gyms

I Agree with Maverick. Virgin Active gyms are quality. I just wish they weren't so damn expensive! You're looking at about 80-90 quid per month which seems pretty steep in my book. But Virgin does blow LA fitness, Fitness First et al out of the water. Great pool, nice people and a great part of Clapham. I think i'm going to have to join....

Qype: Scooterworks UK: The Workshop in London

London - Cars & Bikes - Motorbike Dealers - Cars & Bikes - MOT Testing Centres - Cars & Bikes - Parts & Accessories - Cars & Bikes - Garages & Mechanics - Cars & Bikes - Breakdown Services

The Scooterworks is awesome. I was SO close to buying an awesome Lambretta a couple of weeks ago. The guys in here are cool and super chilled out and it's the sort of place that could easily be a coffee shop too! They have a decent range of vintage scooters (not everything on sale is on display in the shop) and are very good at giving advice around proficiency tests, equipment etc.

Highly recommended!

Qype: Roti Joupa in London

London - Restaurants - Take Away

If it's West Indian take away you're after, Roti Joupa is the way forward. The jerk chicken here is the perfect snack for the beer swilling claphamites out on the town on friday and saturday night and you often see queues snaking out of the door around 1-2am. The staff in here are super chilled out and very friendly (and they also do standard fried chicken as well as west indian treats!)

Highly recommended.

Qype: Vapiano in London

London - Restaurants - Italian & Pizza

I couldn't believe it when i discovered vapiano in London. Amazing! I've been to the chain a number of times in Hamburg and it was cool to see not much has changed in this London branch. Super cheap salads and great pizzas. Awesome that you don't have to wait for your bill! (everything is done with a little swipey card).

A great place for lunch in Soho.

Qype: Strada in London

London - Restaurants - Italian & Pizza

Not a huge amount to say about Strada on Clapham High street. It's decent, and is of the same high standard as the other branches around London. I am always bamboozled by the sheer size of the pizzas here! Bring a big appetite, that's all i'll say!

Qype: Payless Food & Wine in London

London - Food & Drink - Convenience Stores

Payless actually have a phenomenal selection of international beers. From Asahi to Samuel Adams and Tiger to Castle Lager. I don't really know how or why they have so many varieties of beer, but hey, i'm not complaining. The selection of beer and wine in here blows the high street Sainsbury's out of the water and the gents in here are always really chatty. This is what all off licenses should be like!

Qype: Greggs in London

London - Food & Drink - Bakeries

My sister-in-law loves Greggs, but i've never really been a fan. I think it's a bit like Marmite. You either love it or hate. The pies are ok i guess and i remember having a particularly good sausage roll here a couple of months ago, but other than that Gregg's just doesn't blow my hair back. Overpriced, generally poor quality food and a bit of a scar on Clapham High Street.
Check out my review of Greggs - I am ahunter - on Qype

Qype: Clapham Confectioners in London

London - Food & Drink - Wine, Beer & Spirits

This is the place to come when you are sunbathing on the common and are in need of ice cream, cold drinks, cigarettes and snacks. I think they sell beer, but i can't be 100% sure. Staff are friendly but be warned, stock runs out very quickly on a hot day or when there is a festival on the common!

Qype: coffee man with a van in London

London - Cafes & Coffee Shops - Cafes

I had the best orange juice from this place i think i have ever had. I'm not a coffee drinker, i was slightly hungover and the £1.50 bottle of juice i bought was just what i needed. I have completely forgotten the name of the juice (other than that it was "hand squeezed") but i will be heading back next sunday morning to find out! A real Clapham gem!

Qype: Clapham Art Gallery in London

London - Arts & Entertainment - Museums

Established in 1998, clapham art gallery has become a leading specialist in discovering and promoting emerging. Located right by the Clapham Picturehouse, the Gallery adds to the charm of Venn street and frequently showcases some cracking artwork. I just wish they would update their website as the calendar currently shows exhibitions from 2006!

Qype: Fun & Games in London

London - Arts & Entertainment - Amusement Parks

Fun and Games has been on the high street for a number of years now. I've walked past it 100's of times and the other night i decided to have a closer look. Now, i don't gamble and i hate fruit machines but i must admit i was lured in by the "Who wants to be a Millionaire" quiz game. Fun and Games is a pretty dingy place. The sort of establishment where the walls have been stained from years of smoke and the carpet smells like wet dog. Anyway, i had a quick whizz on WWTBAM and ended up winning £5! I'll never go back in here, but it felt quite satisfying setting foot in here after so many years and winning some money!

Qype: Cafe De Hong Kong in London

London - Restaurants - Chinese

Decent, cheap and and tasty. I'd recommend the fried rice with shredded chicken. It's £5.50 and it could easily feed 2 people! Watch out for the chilli sauce, it's seriously spicy.

Nothing else to add really. There isn't really anything that sets Cafe De Hong Kong apart from the rest of the Chinese restaurants in China Town, but if you're on a budget and want something fast and tasty, this is a good bet.

Qype: The No. 88 Bus in London

London

Take a look at the picture. There she is folks, the majestic no. 88 double decker. I take this bus everyday, twice sometimes, so i thought it apt that i review it!

Our story begins in sleepy Acton Green in the summer of 1950. A maverick names Jonathan Jones pushed for this route to extend all the way to Mitcham and then had the audacity to ask for a Banstead Hospital extension on Sundays. I know, this man defines the word "Hero". In Late 1990, Jonathan Jones is no longer part of the story i'm afraid, the route was extended to Clapham Common in the South and Camden Town in the north and in the last 18 years (apart from the addition of a night service) the route has changed very little.

The journey time from Clapham Common to Central London is approximately 25 minutes (40 mins to Camden) and the bus snakes through Stockwell, Vauxhall and Westminster on the way into town. If you're a tourist staying south of the river, this is a great way to get your bearing and see sights such as The Thames, The London Eye, Westminster Abbey, The Houses of Parliment, The Cenotaph, Trafalgar Square and of course the hippes and punks of Camden market. The bus gets very full between Clapham Common and Stockwell during rush hour, but it's relatively easy to find a seat on most legs of the journey.

A great route and even though it is 10 minutes slower than the tube, it is a much better way to get to work in the morning!

Qype: Salisbury Pub in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

How did i miss this place!? I've been working in this area for some time now and i've always favoured The Harp over any other pub in Central London. I can't believe i'm saying this, but i think i've found my new "work local".

The Salisbury is blissfully Victorian. Dark wooden furniture, ornate candlestick holders, a bustling, jolly crowd and wafts of mulled wine floating through the bar. Oh, and the sign outside the pub has a picture of a man with a beard. (ThE Duke of Salisbury?) Always a winner in my book. Plenty of real ale here - Deuchars, IPA, Young's, Morrisey Fox and many, many more. I didn't try the food, but the menu looked fantastic. Lots of traditionqal british food - Bangers, Pies and Roast. Perfect.

This pub is so good. I might go back again this week.

Qype: The Real Greek in London

London - Restaurants - Greek

The Real Greek made a very bad start today at lunch time. We waited for a number of minutes to be acknowledged by a waiter to show us to a seat and we proceeded to wait for at least 10 minutes (maybe 15) for our order to be taken. At this point i was thinking this place is getting 1 star :) Thankfully they half made up for it with the food. Very nice skewered chicken, the aubergine paste was delicious and i tried Octopus for the first time!

Good food, but all in all pretty shocking service.

Qype: Khan's Of Kensington in London

London - Restaurants - Take Away - Indian

Khan's of Kensington only just makes it to 3*s in my book. I have walked past this places 100s of times and always wondered what it would be like. Unfortunately, we were all a bit disappointed by the end result. The chicken korma could have come out of a can and reminded me a bit of cheap takeaway leftovers that had been put in the fridge and then reheated the following day. The naan bread was cold and a bit too light. In Khan's defence, the service was very good and the location is obviously killer. Perhaps they've just got a bit lazy over the years serving up curry to paletteless tourists. Who knows. One thing is for sure, you can definitely find MUCH better curry in this part of town.

Qype: The White Hart in London

London - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

A decent little pub about 250m from Waterloo station. I'm pleased to have found as i have always struggled to find good boozers around Waterloo station. The food was good, but not great. I went for Bangers n' Mash which was perfectly adequate but certainly not the best i have ever had. Everyone else seemed to have enjoyed their meals. Oh, they also have a Mame video game table in the pub! Immediate points in my book!

The thing that really disappointed me was the number ales in service. I don't mind pubs with 2 pumps serving Bombadier and London Pride as long as both pumps are working! The White Hart was offering a number of exotic ales (5 in total i think) - names like Bonfire Toffee and Kentish Roast. But of the 5 only one pump was working! Very disappointing for a saturday afternoon.

I'll be back as long as they sort the ale situation out.

Qype: Joe's Stone Crab in Miami

Miami - Restaurants - Seafood

The Florida stone crab are legal for harvest from October 15 until May 15. During the 1960s, the species was almost exterminated by overfishing, but an eight-year moratorium was imposed and the population was restored. So, every year between October and May, the restaurants of Miami serve delicious stone crab. Of all restaurants, Joe's does the best. The stone crab claws are huge, the meat is thick and tasty. If you can eat more than 4 claws you are a better man than me! Service is great at Joe's and they are very helpful, particularly when coming across English men with letter experience of cracking crab shells!

Any easy 5 stars.

Qype: Nautilus @ The Loews Hotel in Miami

Miami

This is the cocktail bar and restaurant by the main pool at the Loews Hotel in Miami. Nautilus serves typical snack food that you'd expect to find at a hotel bar - Burgers, BLT's, Salads and plenty of options for kids. The prices are very steep (you're looking at $20-25 for a burger and a drink), so i only ate here once. Quality of the food was good though.

Plenty of cocktails on offer and 3 to 4 plasma screens, so you can watch the big game and work on your tan at the same time!

Qype: 11th Street Diner in Miami

Miami

This is a proper all American diner. Mountains of pancakes swimming in maple syrup, sausage links, frazzled bacon, bottomless coffee and every waitress is called Pam. The perfect place to spend a hungover morning and plan the days activities on South Beach.

You can eat well here for less than $10, So if you're on a budget, this is the place for you!

Qype: Guru Fine Indian Cuisine in Miami

Miami

After 3 weeks out of the UK, we were desperately craving GOOD Indian food. I knew it was going to be difficult to find decent Indian food in the states so i was delighted when we discovered Guru. A hop, skip and a jump from the beach, Guru offers exceptional Indian cuisine at very reasonable prices. My litmus test is always butter chicken and i was not disappointed. The garlic naan was hot and tasty and the service was some of the best we had had in Florida. This place was so good, we ate here 2 nights in a row and took our own Guru friend back for his stamp of approval.

Best value Indian in South Beach (and most likely Miami)

Qype: Holiday Inn Express in Florida

Florida

This is actually one of the best Holiday Inn's i have ever stayed at. The room was very spacious and particularly comfortable, free wifi and friendly staff (i think they must have a relationship with the university of florida as all the staff looked about 19! If i'm ever back in Gainesville, i'll be sure to stay here again! 1 night in a deluxe twin will set you back $100 on the nose. Excellent value in my book.

Qype: The Natural History Museum in London

London - Arts & Entertainment - Museums

I THINK this is my favourite museum in London. We visited alot when i was a kid and i just get a special feeling when i walk into the Natural History Museum. The architecture is phenomenal. The entire design of the building (inside and out) is jaw droppingly beautiful.

Best time to visit? - Go when the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition is on. It's pretty incredible and this exhibition add yet another string to this 5* bow.

Qype: Hooters of Bayside in Miami

Miami - Nightlife - Adult Entertainment - Restaurants - Theme Restaurants

"Delightfully tacky, yet unrefined" is the Hooters tagline and i'd say that's pretty spot on. That's right, i went to Hooters :) We'd just driven 4 hours from Orlando to Miami and I was in the mood for a cheeseburger. The fact that Hooters was the first place we came across was pure chance (honestly).

Big, fattening American food and lots of scantily clad waitresses. That's all this place is.

Qype: Mansion Nightclub Miami in Miami

Miami

Mansion is the place to be seen on Thursday and Friday night in South Beach. Expect plenty of bling, super expensive drinks and a $20 cover charge ($40 if it's a big event). Clubs in Miami don't really get going until after midnight, so i'd suggest getting here around 11.30pm to avoid queues. If you don't have ladies with you, you're going to find it tough to get in....

Worth going once, but if i was back in Miami i would probably avoid it.

Qype: The Texas Embassy Cantina Ltd in London

London - Restaurants - Fast Food & American

The Texas Embassy was absolutely heaving on Wednesday night as this was where they were hosting the American's Abroad Democrats celebration. We ate in the restaurant (and were very lucky to get a table). The food is a combination of tex-mex and good ol' american. My cheeseburger was adequate but by no means amazing. Decent selection of beers, but nothing on tap.

The upstairs function area/bar is pretty huge so if you're every planning on a private party for 1-200 people, this is the place to go!

Qype: Nikki Beach Club in Miami

Miami - Nightlife - Clubs

Nestled between the beach, the famous Trump tower and the designer shops of Ocean drive and Collins street, you will find Nikki Beach. This is one of the best beach clubs i have ever been to. If the weather is good (which it often is in Miami), hit this place on the weekend between 2-6pm (particularly good on Sunday). Dancing, good food, great lounge chairs and beautiful people. Drinks can be very expensive ($10+ for any kind of alcoholic drink) and the food is pricey but delicious. At 6-6.30pm the Nikki beach club shuts down for dinner but then opens up again around 10pm for the well dressed stiletto heeled pretty people of South Beach. This place is party central on Sunday from around midnight into the wee hours.

Qype: Miami Beach International Travelers Hostel in Miami

Miami

Throughout my stay at the Miami Beach International Travelers Hostel, the star rating in my mind fluctuated all the way from 5*s to 1* and then back to 5*s so i've decided to settle somewhere in the middle on 3 (but if we're being picky i'd say 2.7).

If you want to party in Miami and you're looking for budget accommodation, this is the place to stay. The hostel is spitting distance from the beach and is only a couple block away from all the great nightclubs, restaurants and bars South Beach has to offer. The place is clean, the facilities are good (free wifi, PC terminals, pool table, table tennis table, bar, patio etc.) and all the rooms are well air conditioned.

The problem - The staff. Don't get me wrong, these are lovely, lovely people. Extremely welcoming, accommodating and always willing to offer advice or kick back and have a beer. Unfortunately they couldn't organize an opening of a letter. The check-in process is laughable (it took me and all my friends at least 1/2 hour to check in) and getting simple things done like storing luggage, additional room keys, getting fresh towels and paying for the room was about as much fun as a kick in the face.

My advice to the Miami Beach International Travelers Hostel is simple -

1. Get a computer guys. Having some basic booking software would really speed things up and save your guest from all the painful 20 minute waits while you wait for a room deposit amount written on a cocktail napkin.

2. Do not lose your communal hostel vibe, but remember these are paying customers staying with you (We were paying $100 a night for a twin room). Treat us like paying customers. If i want another room key - make it snappy. If i'd like to settle my bill early - let me do it!

This hostel is SO close to getting it right, but falls over when it comes to efficient customer service. Train your staff better and buy a computer and you'll almost be there....

Qype: The Loews Hotel - South Beach in Miami

Miami

The Loews Hotel in Miami offers some of the best views of Florida's famous South Beach. This is a BIG hotel with close to 1000 rooms and 2 amazing presidential suites - no, i didn't get to stay in the suite :). In addition to having 6 fantastic restaurants and 2 great bars, the Loews has an awesome oceanfront swimming pool and Jacuzzi area. I spent 2 nights here (i wish i stayed longer!) and felt well looked after every step of the way.

Why only 4 stars i hear you cry? Well, The room was pretty darn expensive and the food and drink (particularly around the pool) was outrageous. $25 for a cheeseburger? You have to be shitting me.....

All in all though a fantastic hotel. When i go back to Miami i will definitely will consider the Loews again, part of me just wonders if there are better deals to be had on South Beach...
